Court Sends Scavenger to Jail for Vandalising Public School in Akure

An Akure Magistrate’s Court has sentenced a scavenger, Ibironke Adedayo, to six months in prison for vandalising a public primary school and stealing roofing sheets from the premises.

Adedayo, who was not represented by a lawyer, was arraigned on two charges of malicious damage and theft. He pleaded guilty to both offences.

Prosecutor Augustine Omhenihen told the court that the defendant committed the crime with another suspect who is still on the run.

The incident occurred on July 15, 2026, at St. Thomas Anglican Primary School in Akure, where the pair allegedly damaged part of the school building and removed roofing sheets valued at about ₦9,000.

The prosecution said the offences violated Sections 451 and 409 of the Ondo State Criminal Code.

Omhenihen also informed the court that Adedayo and his accomplice had previously attempted to steal roofing sheets from the same school but escaped arrest.

They reportedly returned to the school for another attempt before residents and security personnel intervened, leading to Adedayo’s arrest.

In his ruling, Magistrate O.T. Lebi noted that although the defendant was a first-time offender, the crime was serious because it involved the destruction of public property.

He sentenced Adedayo to six months imprisonment for malicious damage and another six months for theft.

The court ordered that both sentences run concurrently, meaning the convict will serve a total of six months in prison.
