Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz has parted ways with the Ghana national team for the second time in three months following a difficult return that ended with consecutive defeats.
The 73-year-old coach and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) mutually agreed to terminate his contract after Ghana suffered a 4-2 home defeat to The Gambia on September 29. The result came just days after the Black Stars were beaten 2-0 by Côte d’Ivoire.
Queiroz initially resigned as Ghana’s head coach on July 5, following the team’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, he returned to the position about nine weeks later in early September, beginning what was expected to be another attempt to rebuild the Black Stars.
His second spell, however, lasted only a few weeks.
In a statement confirming the termination of the agreement, Queiroz said both parties considered the decision to be the most appropriate option under the circumstances.
«“This was not an easy decision, but both parties agreed that, under the present circumstances, ending our professional relationship was the most appropriate course of action, with the interests of Ghana, the Black Stars and Ghanaian football above everything else,” Queiroz said.»
The Portuguese coach thanked the GFA and its president for the opportunity to lead the national team, adding that he had arrived with the intention of helping Ghana build a stronger future and develop its footballing talent.
He acknowledged that the team had struggled to produce the desired results and said the circumstances surrounding the team had contributed to the decision to end his latest tenure.
Queiroz’s return ended after seven matches, during which Ghana recorded one victory, two draws and two defeats, according to the report.
The 4-2 defeat to The Gambia was particularly damaging. Ghana, ranked 65th in the FIFA rankings, surrendered a two-goal advantage at home before eventually losing to the Gambian side, which was ranked 116th.
Queiroz has enjoyed a long managerial career at both club and international level.
One of his most prominent club appointments came at Real Madrid during the 2003/04 season. Before that, he had served as an assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.
During his time at Manchester United, the club won three Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League in 2008.
Ghana became the ninth national team to be managed by Queiroz.
His previous international coaching assignments included South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, Colombia, Egypt, Qatar and Oman, where he left his position in March.
His latest departure leaves Ghana once again searching for a new head coach only weeks after bringing Queiroz back to the Black Stars.
The Ghana Football Association will now have to begin the process of identifying another manager as the team prepares for its upcoming international commitments.
