Brazil coach and former Real Madrid manager, Carlo Ancelotti, has been sentenced to a one-year suspended prison term on Wednesday by a Spanish court for tax fraud.
The court in Madrid also fined Ancelotti €386,000 ($452,187) after he was found guilty of defrauding the Spanish state of €1 million in 2014 and 2015 during his time at Real Madrid.
Spanish prosecutors had initially sought a sentence of up to four years and nine months for the 66-year-old Italian.
Ancelotti was accused of using offshore shell companies to conceal income, including one based in the Virgin Islands that prosecutors said had no real economic activity.
Under Spanish law, first-time offenders with sentences under two years often avoid jail time, making Ancelotti eligible for a suspended sentence.
Ancelotti’s press officer, Carlos Sanchez, said the coach would not comment for now.
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) said it was following the matter but did not immediately issue a public statement.
Ancelotti left Real Madrid at the end of the 2024–25 season to take charge of the Brazilian national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He is the only manager in football history to have won five UEFA Champions League titles and has also secured domestic league titles in England, Spain, Germany, Italy and France.
Other high-profile football figures, including Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Mourinho, have faced similar tax-related prosecutions in Spain, but none have served jail time.
