Bwala Accuses Obi Of Fostering ‘Political Extremism’

Presidential spokesman Daniel Bwala has accused the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, of fostering what he described as a movement of political extremists, alleging that the former Anambra State governor has failed to take responsibility for the conduct of some of his supporters.

Speaking during an interview on TVC’s Politics on Sunday, Bwala dismissed claims that he was obsessed with criticising Obi, insisting that his comments were usually in response to statements made by the former governor’s supporters.

According to him, media organisations often seek the Presidency’s reaction after remarks by Obi’s supporters, contrary to the impression that government officials deliberately target the opposition figure.

“Every time, his people are the first to talk, the media houses will ask us to react. But the narrative peddled by the media is as if we wake up from sleep and we are looking for Peter Obi,” he said.

Bwala also maintained that Obi does not pose a political challenge to President Bola Tinubu.

“Obi is inconsequential… Peter Obi is not a match to Asiwaju. All the governors that have governed in Lagos have all done better than Peter Obi. So, Peter Obi is not a match,” he stated.

The presidential aide further alleged that Obi had introduced what he described as a dangerous trend into Nigeria’s political landscape.

“Peter Obi introduced into our politics a very dangerous phenomenon. He is building a movement that will be no far different from bandits,” Bwala said, while claiming that some of Obi’s supporters recently circulated false reports of his death.

When asked to explain his comparison between members of the Obidient Movement and bandits, Bwala said he was referring to political extremism.

“They are political extremists,” he said.

To support his claim, Bwala referenced an incident involving a supporter of Obi who was criticised online after meeting Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu.

According to him, the individual came under intense attacks from fellow supporters, while Obi was also criticised after meeting the person.

“These people wanted to eat him alive. When he called their bluff, Peter Obi flew from Lagos and went and met him. Do you know these people were online abusing him? But when Peter Obi went to meet him, he said it is the opposition abusing him,” Bwala alleged.

He further accused the former Anambra governor of repeatedly distancing himself from the actions of his supporters instead of taking responsibility for their conduct.

“He has never accepted the responsibility of the conduct of his people. He has always said it is the opposition,” Bwala said.
