Human rights activist and Yoruba advocate, Chief Sunday Adeyemo Igboho, has officially launched the Irun Ekun Security Network in Ondo State, in a major move aimed at strengthening community-based security efforts and supporting the fight against banditry, kidnapping, armed attacks and other forms of criminality across the state and the wider South-West region.

The launch, held at Democracy Park, Akure, attracted thousands of newly recruited volunteers drawn from all 18 Local Government Areas of Ondo State, alongside traditional rulers, community leaders, security stakeholders and other residents who gathered to witness the commencement of the security initiative.

The recruits, who expressed their readiness to contribute to the protection of lives and property, were urged to operate within the law and work closely with existing government security agencies to improve security across communities in the state.

Speaking at the event, Chief Sunday Adeyemo Igboho expressed satisfaction with the large turnout and commended the volunteers for their willingness to serve their communities.

He charged the newly recruited personnel to remain professional, disciplined and responsible in the discharge of their duties, stressing that the security network would not tolerate indiscipline or abuse of power.

Igboho particularly warned the recruits against interfering in domestic matters or becoming involved in matrimonial and family disputes.

According to him, their primary responsibility should be focused on combating serious security threats, including banditry, kidnapping, armed criminal activities and other violent crimes.

He assured the recruits that they would receive appropriate training to equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge required to operate professionally and responsibly.

Igboho also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as the Federal Government’s support and permission for community-based security initiatives to contribute to the fight against insecurity, particularly across the South-West.

He called on Nigerians, especially residents of the South-West, to support the administration of President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections, citing the need for continuity in the government’s efforts to address insecurity and other national challenges.

The human rights activist further stressed the importance of strong cooperation and intelligence sharing among all security agencies and community-based security outfits, saying that greater synergy would make it easier to prevent criminal activities and respond effectively to security threats across Ondo State and other parts of the South-West.

NEW COMMANDANT APPOINTED.

A major highlight of the event was the appointment of Mr. Olusegun Afolabi as the Commandant of the Irun Ekun Security Network in Ondo State.

Afolabi is expected to coordinate the activities of the network across the state and ensure that its operations are carried out in accordance with established rules, security procedures and applicable laws.

Igboho charged the newly appointed commandant to demonstrate leadership, discipline and commitment, while working with relevant authorities to reduce criminal activities and improve the safety of residents.

The launch also featured a visit to the Olowo of Owo, Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye III, as part of efforts to strengthen engagement with traditional institutions and secure the support of traditional rulers in promoting peace, security and community safety across Yorubaland.

Igboho noted that traditional rulers and community leaders have an important role to play in providing local intelligence and fostering cooperation between residents and security agencies.

EXPANSION ACROSS THE SOUTH-WEST

The establishment of the Irun Ekun Security Network in Ondo State is part of the broader expansion of the initiative across the South-West region.

The organisers said the initiative is aimed at complementing the efforts of existing security agencies by improving community vigilance, intelligence gathering and early response to threats.

The development comes amid continuing concerns over insecurity in parts of the region, with stakeholders increasingly calling for stronger collaboration between government security agencies, local communities, traditional institutions and community-based security organisations.

With the commencement of operations in Ondo State, the organisers expressed optimism that the Irun Ekun Security Network would contribute to creating a safer environment for residents and strengthening security cooperation across Yorubaland.

However, the network is expected to operate within the law and in coordination with established security institutions to ensure that its activities complement, rather than undermine, the responsibilities of statutory security agencies.

The launch marked another major step in the organisers’ stated efforts to expand the security initiative across the South-West and contribute to the collective pursuit of peace, safety and stability in the region.
