A Bolt driver has been stabbed to death in Calabar, Cross River State, after allegedly resisting an attempt by three unidentified men to dispossess him of his vehicle.
The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Friday at about 5:30 a.m. along Target Road in Calabar South Local Government Area of the state.
The driver was said to have been operating a Toyota Corolla with registration number UYY 256H when the incident happened.
According to an eyewitness, the driver had earlier picked up three male passengers along Mbukpa Road in Calabar South and was taking them towards Calabar Municipality.
However, during the journey, the passengers allegedly instructed him to stop the vehicle and hand over the car keys to them.
The eyewitness said the suspects began threatening the driver after he refused to comply with their demands.
While the vehicle was still in motion, the men allegedly attacked and stabbed him.
Despite sustaining serious injuries, the driver reportedly managed to remain behind the wheel and continued driving in an attempt to escape from the attackers.
He eventually reached the vicinity of a nearby filling station, where he reportedly lost control of the vehicle.
The Toyota Corolla subsequently veered into a gutter and struck the pavement. The three suspects reportedly took advantage of the situation to escape from the scene before help could arrive.
Passersby who noticed the injured driver reportedly rushed to assist him and took him to the General Hospital in Calabar for treatment.
However, medical personnel confirmed that he had died by the time he arrived at the hospital.
The incident has sparked concern among residents and commercial drivers in the city, particularly over the safety of ride-hailing operators who often work at odd hours and pick up passengers from different locations.
Confirming the incident, the Cross River State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, said the police command was aware of the killing and had launched an investigation.
According to the police spokesperson, efforts were already underway to establish the identities of the suspects and track them down.
The police assured that investigators would work to uncover the circumstances surrounding the attack and bring those responsible for the driver’s death to justice.
The killing has also renewed concerns about the security risks faced by ride-hailing and commercial drivers, especially during the early morning and late-night hours
