July 6 (Koikimedia) – Arsenal have officially secured the signing of Spanish international and defensive midfield powerhouse Martín Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, the Premier League club confirmed on Sunday. The move marks a significant reinforcement in the Gunners’ midfield following the departure of key players last month.
While the financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed, multiple UK media sources report that Arsenal activated the €60 million ($70.67 million) release clause in Zubimendi’s Sociedad contract, which had been due to run until 2027.
Zubimendi, 26, becomes Arsenal’s second signing of the summer transfer window, following the arrival of Spanish goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. Manager Mikel Arteta is aiming to bolster the squad as they seek to convert their consistent top-tier performances into a Premier League title after three consecutive runner-up finishes.
“This is a massive step in my career – the move I was hoping for,” Zubimendi said in his first statement as an Arsenal player. “From the moment I arrived, I could feel how big this club is. Arsenal’s style of football is a great match for me, and I believe the best is yet to come.”
Zubimendi’s signing addresses a critical need in Arsenal’s engine room, following the exits of Jorginho and Thomas Partey, both of whom left the club at the end of their contracts in June.
Known for his excellent positioning, passing range, and defensive intelligence, Zubimendi is expected to take on the No. 6 role, providing structure and balance to Arsenal’s midfield. His arrival is also likely to grant Declan Rice, Arsenal’s Player of the Season, more license to play further forward alongside captain Martin Ødegaard.
On the international stage, Zubimendi had a memorable year with Spain, playing a pivotal role in their UEFA Euro 2024 triumph, where he stepped in for the injured Rodri during the final. He also found the net in the Nations League final, which Spain narrowly lost to Portugal on penalties.
Crucially, Zubimendi’s early arrival gives Arteta the opportunity to integrate him fully during pre-season training, ahead of a demanding start to the new Premier League campaign. Arsenal’s first six fixtures include high-stakes clashes with Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Newcastle United.
As the Gunners continue to build a team capable of ending their title drought, Zubimendi’s addition signals both ambition and intent.
