Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have successfully repelled a major attack by Islamic State West Africa Province terrorists on a military formation in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State, killing more than 25 insurgents during the fierce encounter.

The attack, which occurred at about 10pm on Tuesday, targeted troops of the 101 Special Forces Battalion.

The terrorists reportedly launched the coordinated assault from four different directions in an attempt to overwhelm the soldiers and breach the military position.

However, the troops mounted a strong resistance and responded with superior firepower, tactical manoeuvres and effective battlefield coordination.

The operation was also supported by the Air Component, which provided critical assistance to the ground forces.

The acting Military Information Officer of the North-East Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai, Capt. Mohammed Goni, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Wednesday.

According to him, the coordinated assault was decisively countered by the troops, who inflicted heavy casualties on the terrorists and forced the surviving attackers to withdraw in disarray.

Goni said preliminary assessments showed that more than 25 terrorists had been neutralised, while 14 bodies had so far been recovered from the area.

Troops also recovered a significant quantity of arms and ammunition during the operation, including six AK-47 rifles.

The military spokesman, however, disclosed that some soldiers were killed during the confrontation, describing their loss as a painful sacrifice made in the defence of the country.

He said troops had commenced further exploitation of the area to recover additional weapons, track fleeing terrorists and prevent the insurgents from regrouping for another attack.

The military said the successful defence of the base demonstrated the combat readiness, resilience and operational effectiveness of Nigerian Army troops operating in the North-East.

Goni also noted that the operation highlighted the growing effectiveness of cooperation between ground troops and the Air Component in disrupting terrorist activities and restricting the freedom of insurgents to operate.

He assured that troops would continue with aggressive patrols, intelligence-led operations and coordinated offensive actions alongside other security agencies in an effort to dismantle terrorist networks, protect vulnerable communities and maintain security across the region.
