An Anambra State High Court in Ogidi has sentenced church choir master James Onuorah to 25 years imprisonment for raping a 16-year-old girl.

Justice Chudi Nwankwo convicted the defendant on charges of rape and offensive conduct, sentencing him to 25 years and seven years respectively, with both terms to run concurrently.

According to the prosecution, Onuorah used his position as a church worker to gain the trust of the victim’s family before committing the offence.

The court heard evidence that the incident resulted in a pregnancy, and the victim later gave birth in April 2026.

After reviewing the evidence and witness testimonies, the court ruled that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The judge also ordered the defendant to pay ₦5 million compensation to the victim.

The court, however, cleared him of a separate allegation involving the victim’s elder sister, citing insufficient evidence to support the charge.
