Accept 2023 Election Outcome, Stop Claiming Victory — Onanuga Tells Obi

Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga has urged the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, to accept the outcome of the 2023 presidential election, saying the former Anambra State governor should stop insisting he won the poll.

Onanuga made the remarks in a statement issued after Obi’s appearance on Channels Television, where he criticised the former Labour Party presidential candidate’s comments and challenged his account of his political career.

The presidential spokesman dismissed Obi’s comparison of his political journey with that of President Bola Tinubu, insisting that the President had consistently remained within the progressive political family.

According to him, Tinubu’s political career began in the Social Democratic Party (SDP), before he moved to the Alliance for Democracy (AD), Action Congress (AC), Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), and later became a founding figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC), which emerged from the merger of opposition parties in 2013.

Onanuga argued that Obi’s political career had followed a different path, noting that he was elected governor under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), later defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), contested the 2019 presidential election as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate, moved to the Labour Party before the 2023 election, and has now aligned with the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

He also alleged that the Labour Party descended into a leadership crisis after the 2023 election and claimed that campaign funds previously entrusted to Obi had yet to be fully accounted for.

The presidential spokesman further accused Obi of leaving political parties whenever they encountered internal challenges instead of remaining to resolve disputes and build stronger party structures.

On the 2023 presidential election, Onanuga maintained that Obi neither won the poll nor was denied victory, stressing that the election results were affirmed at every level of the judicial process, including by the Supreme Court.

He criticised Obi for continuing to challenge the outcome despite the court rulings.

“Mr Obi, it is time you accepted the stark reality of the loss. Stop dreaming of a victory that you never had,” Onanuga said.

He urged the former Anambra State governor to move beyond the 2023 election and focus on future political engagements rather than reopening issues he said had already been conclusively settled by the courts.
