One person has sustained minor injuries after a five-storey building under construction partially collapsed on Durban Street, Wuse II, Abuja, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has said.

The agency disclosed that the incident occurred on Saturday evening, prompting the immediate mobilisation of emergency responders to the scene.

According to a statement issued by NEMA’s Press Unit on Sunday, the agency’s Abuja Operations Office received an alert about the incident at approximately 6:30 p.m.

Following the report, NEMA activated relevant emergency response stakeholders, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Fire Service, to assist with the operation.

The agency also deployed its AYA Emergency Response Ambulance Bay team to coordinate search and rescue activities and provide emergency medical assistance where necessary.

NEMA explained that preliminary findings indicated that the incident involved the partial collapse of a five-storey building that was still under construction.

The agency confirmed that no lives were lost in the incident, adding that the injured worker was evacuated to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

The latest incident has raised fresh concerns about building safety and compliance with construction standards in the Federal Capital Territory, where several building collapses have been reported in recent months.

On September 7, 2026, a three-storey building collapsed in Wuse Zone 4, Abuja, hours after officials of the FCT Administration’s Department of Development Control reportedly sealed the property and ordered occupants to vacate the premises over concerns about its structural safety.

Reports indicated that the building had shown signs of distress before the collapse.

Emergency responders were subsequently mobilised to the scene, although initial reports did not confirm any casualties.

The incident came after a fatal building collapse in the Durumi 3 area, near Gudu Market, Abuja, on May 16, 2026.

The three-storey building, which was under construction, collapsed, killing at least five people and injuring several others.

Following the tragedy, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike ordered an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collapse.

The developer and an engineer linked to the project were also reported to be facing possible arrest as part of efforts to establish responsibility for the incident.

Wike subsequently warned property developers to comply with approved building regulations and ensure that construction projects meet the required safety standards.

He also emphasised the need for developers to cooperate with relevant government authorities by allowing inspections of construction sites to prevent avoidable disasters.

Saturday’s partial collapse on Durban Street adds to the growing concerns over the safety of buildings under construction in Abuja and the need for effective monitoring of development projects.

Although no fatalities were recorded in the latest incident, the injured worker’s evacuation to hospital highlights the importance of prompt emergency response whenever structural failures occur.

The circumstances surrounding the partial collapse have yet to be fully established, including whether any construction defects or violations of building regulations contributed to the incident.
