Lagos – The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) on Thursday rescued a driver with broken legs, and two others with head injuries after two loaded trucks had a head-on collision.
The crash happened at Ajegunle bus-stop, heading towards Toll-gate, Sango, according to a statement by the Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq.
The Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, Sola Giwa made this known.
“Early this morning, operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority swiftly responded to a serious head-on collision between two loaded trucks, rescuing a truck driver with broken legs and two others with serious head injuries,” the statement said.
According to the LASTMA statement, Mr Giwa, said the “collision involved two loaded trucks transporting bottled Maltina (FKJ 240 XS) and floor tiles.”
LASTMA spokesperson said investigation showed that one of the trucks while driving against traffic at high speed, lost control due to brake failure before it collided with the oncoming truck fully loaded with floor tiles.
“The rescued truck driver with broken legs and the two others with serious head injuries were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital. LASTMA has called the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency Response Unit to evaluate both trucks to ensure free vehicular movement around the accident scene,’’ he said.
Lamenting drivers’ continued violation of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018, despite ongoing government campaigns against driving against oncoming vehicles, Mr Giwa reiterated the importance of vehicle maintenance, particularly the braking system.
The governor’s SA on Transportation, however, warned truck drivers and private car owners against speeding and advised them to check the condition of their vehicles before driving, especially during the rainy season. He also sympathised with the accident victims.
