A man was reportedly charged to court in Nigeria’s northwestern state of Kano for allegedly assaulting an imam.

Nasiru Mukhtar was remanded by the State Shariah Court at Kofar Kudu for allegedly assaulting Imam Malam Murtala Sulaiman during morning prayers at a mosque in the Tudunwada area.

Mukhtar reportedly stormed the mosque around 5 a.m. on October 22, 2024, held the Islamic cleric by the neck, and slapped him before tearing his clothes and taking his microphone.

Following the altercation, the imam filed a complaint with the state police command, leading to Mukhtar’s arrest.

During the court proceedings, Mukhtar’s defence counsel requested bail, citing the need for further investigation, with the presiding judge, Malam Isah Rabi’u Gaya, ordering a psychiatric evaluation to assess the accused person’s mental state.

The court adjourned the case until November 22, 2024, while the accused remains in custody.
