Pep Guardiola is set to make his first return to the Etihad Stadium since leaving Manchester City, with the former manager expected to watch the club’s Champions League meeting with Paris Saint-Germain on October 14.
Guardiola ended his decade-long reign at Manchester City at the conclusion of last season after overseeing one of the most successful periods in the club’s history. His expected appearance at the Etihad will be his first since stepping down from the position.
The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach left behind an impressive legacy at Manchester City, having guided the club to six Premier League titles, including four successive championships.
He also delivered the club’s first Champions League trophy, alongside three FA Cups and five League Cups.
His return comes as Manchester City continue to deal with the aftermath of the Premier League’s investigation into 115 alleged financial-rule breaches covering the period between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons.
An independent commission found the club guilty of the majority of the charges.
Manchester City have rejected the allegations of wrongdoing and have appealed the commission’s findings.
Guardiola has continued to publicly back the club despite the controversy. The Spaniard recently reiterated his support for Manchester City and said he would continue to stand by the club as it deals with the ongoing situation.
He had previously insisted that his commitment to City would not change even in the event of a severe punishment.
In November 2024, Guardiola said he would remain with the club even if they were relegated as a consequence of the charges.
Manchester City will enter the Champions League fixture after a difficult domestic assignment against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday. They will then return home to face PSG just three days later.
The Champions League encounter is expected to draw considerable attention, with Guardiola’s presence likely to provide an emotional backdrop to an already high-profile fixture.
For City supporters, the occasion will offer an opportunity to see the manager who spent 10 years reshaping the club’s footballing identity and establishing Manchester City as a dominant force in English and European football.
