Syria is considering providing military assistance to Saudi Arabia as Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi rebels intensify missile and drone attacks on the kingdom, according to US and Syrian officials.
The possible involvement of Syrian forces comes as the conflict in Yemen has once again escalated, creating additional security concerns across the region.
At least three people have been killed in attacks targeting Saudi airports this week, increasing pressure on Riyadh to seek assistance from its allies.
Saudi Arabia has reportedly asked friendly countries, including Turkey and Pakistan, to provide support, whether through military equipment, intelligence, logistics or defensive operations.
Syria is also considering whether to offer defensive assistance to protect Saudi infrastructure or potentially deploy forces to support Saudi-backed Yemeni troops in offensive operations against the Houthis.
On Thursday, loud explosions were reported in Riyadh, although their cause was not immediately confirmed. The Houthis later claimed responsibility for an attack on King Khalid International Airport using a ballistic missile. Saudi authorities had yet to publicly confirm the claim.
The renewed fighting follows the collapse of a period of relative calm in Yemen. The Houthis have recently expanded their control along parts of the Red Sea coast, including areas near the strategically important Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
Saudi-backed forces have responded with counterattacks aimed at reversing those territorial gains.
The conflict has also intensified around Taiz, Yemen’s third-largest city, where Houthi forces have reportedly captured territory along an important mountain route linking the city to Aden.
A Syrian diplomat said Damascus stands firmly with Saudi Arabia against the Houthi attacks but stressed that Syria’s immediate priority remains rebuilding the country after years of civil war.
The diplomat added that any military cooperation with Saudi Arabia would be conducted through official channels and existing bilateral agreements.
Turkey has already indicated that it will provide mainly defensive and technical assistance to Saudi Arabia, including military equipment, intelligence support and weapons systems.
Pakistan has also reportedly supplied military equipment to Yemen and deployed troops in Saudi Arabia to assist with border defence.
The renewed conflict has added to the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, with around 200,000 people reportedly displaced since the fighting resumed.
The escalation also raises concerns over security in the Red Sea, a vital shipping route for global trade and Gulf energy exports.
