British authorities have charged a serving member of the Royal Navy after counterterrorism police investigated allegations that he obtained sensitive information for the benefit of an unnamed foreign power.
The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Teddy Young, is facing two offences under the United Kingdom’s National Security Act 2023.
Police allege that Young obtained, copied, recorded or retained protected information with the intention that his actions would benefit a foreign power.
According to the authorities, the alleged offences occurred between November 2024 and May 2025.
Young is also accused of preparing to transfer the protected information in a way that could have served the interests of the foreign state.
The seriousness of the allegations has drawn particular attention because Young is a serving member of the British armed forces.
Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, said investigators had worked closely with colleagues in the Ministry of Defence throughout the investigation.
“These are very serious charges against a serving member of the armed forces,” Flanagan said, adding that appropriate measures had been taken to reduce any potential security risks connected with the case.
British media reports said Young was arrested at his home in Bedfordshire on Tuesday before being taken into custody in London.
He is expected to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London on Thursday.
Police have not disclosed the identity of the foreign power allegedly linked to the case.
The allegations against Young have also not been tested in court, and he remains entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.
Authorities have further clarified that the investigation involving Young is not connected to the separate ongoing investigation into an incident at RAF Fairford.
RAF Fairford, a military airbase in Gloucestershire, has recently been the subject of separate security-related reports, prompting authorities to emphasise that the two investigations are unrelated.
The latest case comes amid heightened concerns in the UK over national security, espionage and attempts by foreign states to obtain sensitive information from British institutions and government agencies.
