The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Adewale Arojah, who is alleged to be the son of a prophet, for reportedly impersonating a popular cleric on Facebook and defrauding several people of more than N18 million.

Arojah was allegedly operating a duplicate Facebook account in the name of Prophet Dr. Muyiwa Akogun, using the cleric’s identity to offer fake prayers, spiritual consultations and prophecies to unsuspecting members of the public.

The arrest followed a complaint filed on October 3, 2026, by Akogun, who reportedly became aware of the fraudulent activities after several people contacted him over transactions carried out through a Facebook profile bearing his name.

According to the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, the complaint prompted the Divisional Police Officer of the Ilaro Division to deploy intelligence and detective officers to identify and apprehend the suspect.

The police said sustained intelligence gathering and technological monitoring eventually led investigators to a village in Ajegunle, along the Ilaro/Ibogun axis, where the suspect was arrested.

During interrogation, the police said Arojah admitted to impersonating the cleric on Facebook.

He allegedly confessed to using the prophet’s identity to make fake spiritual claims and offer prayer services to people seeking assistance.

The police further alleged that the suspect deliberately targeted individuals who visited the genuine prophet’s Facebook page in search of spiritual guidance.

After gaining their confidence, he allegedly persuaded them to send money for various prayer and spiritual services.

Preliminary investigations, according to the command, indicated that victims both within Nigeria and in the diaspora were allegedly defrauded, with the total amount involved exceeding N18 million.

Following his arrest, the suspect was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran, Abeokuta, where further investigations are being conducted.

The police said the investigation would help determine the full extent of the alleged fraud, establish whether other individuals were involved and gather evidence for possible prosecution.

The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Bode Ojajuni, commended officers of the Ilaro Division for their vigilance and swift response, while reaffirming the command’s commitment to combating cybercrime, identity theft and other forms of criminal activity in the state.

The police also urged members of the public to exercise caution when interacting with religious leaders, celebrities and other public figures through social media platforms.

The command advised social media users to verify the identity of individuals requesting money or offering services in the name of prominent personalities before carrying out financial transactions.
