Ekiti Government Approves N10bn for Major Infrastructure Projects

The Ekiti State Executive Council has approved more than N10 billion for the construction and rehabilitation of critical infrastructure across the state, including hospital facilities, roads, solar-powered water schemes, streetlights and an access road to the state’s agro-allied international cargo airport.

The approvals were announced by the State Commissioner for Information, Taiwo Olatunbosun, following the council’s meeting on Tuesday.

Olatunbosun said the projects were part of several policy initiatives and strategic interventions aimed at strengthening governance, expanding infrastructure, improving institutional capacity and supporting sustainable socio-economic development across Ekiti State.

According to him, the approvals covered key sectors including healthcare, water supply, road infrastructure, aviation, public safety, security and institutional development.

He said the projects reflected the administration’s focus on timely implementation, efficient use of public resources and the development of infrastructure capable of improving the living conditions of residents.

N6.765bn Approved for Three Hospitals

The council approved N6.765 billion for the construction of new hospital buildings at the General Hospitals in Ikogosi-Ekiti, Awo-Ekiti and Ipao-Ekiti.

Each of the three hospital projects will receive N2.255 billion, with completion expected within 10 months.

The proposed facilities will include female and male wards, a mortuary, maternity and delivery suites, children’s wards, consulting rooms, theatres, laboratories, staff quarters, gate houses and administrative buildings.

Olatunbosun said the investment was aimed at expanding and modernising healthcare infrastructure while improving access to essential medical services for residents of the benefiting communities and surrounding areas.

He added that the projects were also expected to strengthen the state’s healthcare system and support efforts toward achieving Universal Health Coverage.

N1.681bn for Solar-Powered Water Projects

The Executive Council also approved N1.681 billion for the upgrading and rehabilitation of 104 high-yielding boreholes across the state’s local government areas and Local Council Development Areas.

The intervention is being implemented under the World Bank-supported Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene Programme (SURWASH).

The government plans to convert the selected boreholes into reticulated solar-powered water facilities to improve access to reliable and potable water, particularly in rural and small-town communities.

The commissioner said the 104 boreholes were selected based on the stipulated World Bank and SURWASH criteria, while the procurement process was conducted through open competitive bidding.

The projects are expected to be completed within four weeks, according to the state government.

The intervention is expected to strengthen water supply infrastructure and improve access to safe drinking water across different communities in Ekiti.

N1.093bn Road Projects in Ado-Ekiti

The council further approved N1.093 billion for the construction of Olajiga Street, Egbewa, measuring 400 metres, and the 915-metre GRA 3rd Extension road, covering the Ifesowapo–Ibi Oluwatoba Avenue–Ori Apata corridor in Ado-Ekiti.

The road project will include site clearing, earthworks, concrete drainage construction, pavement works and asphalt laying.

It is expected to be completed within 12 months and will complement the ongoing construction of the GRA 3rd Extension Phases I to IV.

The government said the project was intended to improve connectivity, ease movement within the state capital and support commercial and other socio-economic activities.

Other Projects Approved

The Executive Council also approved N448.074 million for the provision of office equipment for the Ministry of Special Duties and the replacement of worn-out furniture at the Presidential Lodge and its extension.

Another N340.612 million was approved for the construction of a one-kilometre access road linking the threshold of Runway 21 to the CVOR Navigation Aid Site at the Ekiti State Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport in Ado-Ekiti.

The council also approved N155.35 million for Phase II of the Afao-Ekiti streetlight project and the installation of solar-powered streetlights within the Government House area in Ado-Ekiti.

The state government said the various approvals were designed to improve public infrastructure, strengthen service delivery and support economic and social development across Ekiti.

The projects span healthcare, water supply, transportation, aviation, urban infrastructure and government facilities, with several of them expected to be delivered within relatively short periods.

The administration said the investments form part of its broader efforts to expand essential infrastructure and improve access to public services for residents across the state.
