Mbappe Confident of Ballon d’Or Chances After Strong 2026 Campaign

France and Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe has expressed confidence in his chances of winning the prestigious Ballon d’Or award after an impressive individual campaign.

The 27-year-old forward continued his public campaign for recognition on Tuesday, highlighting his goalscoring record across some of football’s biggest competitions.

Mbappe was the leading scorer at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and also finished as the top scorer in both La Liga and the UEFA Champions League last season.

Despite his individual achievements, the French international ended the campaign without a major team trophy.

France were eliminated in the World Cup semi-finals, while Real Madrid finished second in La Liga and were knocked out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals.

Speaking to RFI radio, Mbappe said he believed individual performances and memorable moments would be important factors in determining the winner of the award.

“They won’t announce a team in the envelope, they will announce a player,” Mbappe said.

He added that producing outstanding individual performances was what could make a difference in an award focused on individual achievement.

Mbappe scored 25 goals in La Liga last season, 15 in the Champions League and another 10 at the World Cup.

His performances at the global tournament also saw him become the competition’s all-time leading goalscorer, with 22 World Cup goals.

The Real Madrid forward, however, faces strong competition from several players who combined individual performances with major team honours during the 2026 campaign.

Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres won La Liga and the World Cup, while Paris Saint-Germain’s Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia secured Ligue 1 and Champions League success.

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane is also among the prominent contenders after helping the German club win the Bundesliga.

Mbappe will therefore be hoping his individual goalscoring achievements are enough to earn him the prestigious individual honour despite Real Madrid and France falling short of major trophies during the year.

The Ballon d’Or ceremony is scheduled to take place in London on October 26, when the winner will be announced.
