Tinubu Celebrates Falae at 88, Commends His Contributions to Nigeria’s Democracy

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated elder statesman and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief Olu Falae, on the occasion of his 88th birthday.

Falae, who also served as Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, marked his 88th birthday on Monday, September 21, 2026.

In a statement issued on Monday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described Falae as a distinguished Nigerian whose contributions to public service, democratic development and national affairs had earned him an enduring place in the country’s history.

The President commended Falae’s record in public service, particularly his tenure as Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Minister of Finance.

He also acknowledged his contributions to public administration and economic development.

Tinubu further highlighted Falae’s involvement in the pro-democracy struggle, especially his role in the National Democratic Coalition, NADECO, during the military era.

According to the President, Falae was among prominent Nigerians who advocated the restoration of democratic governance following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

“Chief Falae is a patriot whose life reflects a deep commitment to the service of our nation.

As a co-founder and prominent figure in the NADECO movement, he was among Nigerians who advocated the restoration of democratic governance and defended the principles of constitutional rule and citizens’ rights even at a risk to their lives,” Tinubu said.

The President said Falae’s contributions to public administration, economic development and the struggle for democracy represented significant chapters in Nigeria’s political history.

Tinubu also praised the elder statesman for his courage, wisdom and dedication to national service, noting that his generation played an important role in the country’s political development.

“On this special day, I celebrate your extraordinary courage, wisdom and dedication to Nigeria.

Your generation played an important role in defending the political emancipation of our people, and their sacrifice reminds us of our collective responsibility to strengthen our democracy and build a more prosperous nation,” the President said.

Tinubu prayed for Falae to be blessed with good health, wisdom and renewed strength to continue contributing to the development of Nigeria.

Falae remains a prominent figure in Nigeria’s political history. Before becoming involved in the pro-democracy movement, he held senior government positions, including Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Minister of Finance.

He later became one of the prominent figures associated with NADECO, which campaigned for the restoration of democratic rule during Nigeria’s military era.
