Zverev Leads Germany Into Davis Cup Final 8 as Spain and Britain Also Advance

Newly crowned US Open champion Alexander Zverev has led Germany into the Davis Cup Final 8 after defeating Croatia’s Dino Prizmic in straight sets to secure an unassailable 3-1 lead in their qualifying tie in Halle on Sunday.

Zverev, who has recently strengthened his position among the leading players in world tennis following his US Open triumph, produced a composed performance against Prizmic, winning 6-2, 6-4 to seal Germany’s passage to the final stage of the prestigious team competition.

Germany had taken the initiative on Saturday when Zverev defeated Matej Dodig in straight sets. Croatia, however, responded through Prizmic, who defeated Daniel Altmaier to level the tie and keep his country in contention.

The German team regained the advantage on Sunday when Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz won the doubles rubber.

Their victory left Zverev needing just one more win to secure qualification for Germany.

Spain also secured their place in the Final 8 despite being without star player Carlos Alcaraz.

The Spanish side defeated Chile 3-0, with rising talent Rafael Jodar making an impressive Davis Cup debut.

Jodar defeated Cristian Garin in straight sets on Saturday, while Daniel Merida narrowly overcame Chilean player Alejandro Tabilo in the other singles rubber.

Spain completed the clean sweep on Sunday when Pedro Martinez and Jaume Munar defeated Tabilo and Tomas Barrios Vera in the doubles.

The result confirmed Spain’s qualification for the final stage.
Britain also progressed after recording a convincing 4-0 victory over Ecuador at the Copper Box in London.

The British team entered the tie without leading players such as Jack Draper and Cameron Norrie, but still produced a dominant performance.

Toby Samuel and Wimbledon semi-finalist Arthur Fery won their singles matches against Andres Andrade and Alvaro Guillen Meza respectively on Saturday.

Henry Patten and Neal Skupski then completed Britain’s victory by winning the doubles match on Sunday, ensuring that the hosts would be among the eight nations competing for the Davis Cup title.

Austria, Canada, South Korea and the Czech Republic had already qualified after winning their respective ties on Saturday.

Reigning champions Italy automatically qualified for the Final 8 as the defending champions.
With the qualifying stage now completed, Germany, Spain, Britain, Austria, Canada, South Korea, the Czech Republic and Italy will compete for the Davis Cup trophy in Bologna, Italy, in November.

The Final 8 will be contested over six days, with the qualified nations battling through the knockout stage for the opportunity to lift one of tennis’s most prestigious team trophies.
