Nigeria Moves Ahead With Acquisition of 12 AH-1Z Viper Attack Helicopters

The Nigerian Air Force has taken a major step towards acquiring 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters as part of ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to strengthen the country’s military capabilities and modernise its airpower assets.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, led a delegation of senior Nigerian Air Force officials to the Bell Textron facility in Amarillo, Texas, United States, where a beam-signing ceremony was held to mark a significant stage in the acquisition programme.

The Director of Public Relations and Information, Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, announced the development in a statement issued on Monday.

Ejodame said the milestone formed part of the implementation of the defence cooperation programme between the Nigerian and United States governments.

He explained that the acquisition was also in line with the Federal Government’s broader efforts to modernise the Armed Forces and provide them with improved platforms and capabilities to respond to existing and emerging security challenges.

Speaking at the ceremony, Aneke expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership and support for initiatives aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s defence and security architecture.

The Chief of the Air Staff said the acquisition represented an important development in the NAF’s efforts to build a more capable, professional and mission-ready force.

“The acquisition of the AH-1Z Viper helicopters represents an important milestone in our continuing efforts to build a more capable, professional and mission-ready Nigerian Air Force,” Aneke said.

He explained that the programme was consistent with his command philosophy of developing and sustaining a highly motivated and professional force capable of delivering effective airpower in coordination with surface forces.

According to him, the ultimate objective is to ensure that the capabilities being acquired translate into improved operational effectiveness and contribute to the achievement of Nigeria’s national security objectives.

Aneke also acknowledged the continued support of the United States Government, Bell Textron, Programme Management Air 276 and other stakeholders involved in the AH-1Z Viper programme.

He said continued defence cooperation, technical collaboration and capability development would be essential to the successful implementation of the programme.

The Air Chief further reaffirmed the NAF’s commitment to strengthening strategic partnerships with international defence organisations while maintaining professional standards in the development and deployment of its capabilities.

During the visit, the Nigerian delegation inspected the AH-1Z Viper production line at the Bell Textron facility in Amarillo.

The inspection provided the delegation with an opportunity to assess progress on the programme and engage with stakeholders involved in the production of the helicopters.

The Nigerian Air Force said the latest development underscored the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s military capabilities through the acquisition of modern platforms and enhanced technical partnerships.

The AH-1Z Viper acquisition forms part of wider efforts to improve the NAF’s operational capacity and provide additional air support for ongoing security operations.

The service said the programme would also strengthen its ability to work alongside other branches of the Armed Forces in responding to Nigeria’s security requirements.

The NAF maintained that the development of modern airpower capabilities, combined with training, technical cooperation and strategic partnerships, remained important to its objective of building a more effective and mission-ready force.
