Tinubu Mourns Olu Jacobs, Hails Late Actor as Nigerian Creative Industry Icon

President Bola Tinubu has expressed his condolences following the death of veteran Nollywood actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, who died at the age of 84.

Jacobs’ death was announced on Wednesday by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, in a post on Instagram.

In a condolence statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described the late actor as one of Nigeria’s most distinguished thespians and a towering figure whose remarkable career spanned theatre, television and film in Nigeria and internationally.

The President said Jacobs made significant contributions to the growth and professional development of Nigeria’s entertainment industry, while his talent, discipline and commitment to his craft inspired generations of actors, filmmakers and other creative professionals.

Tinubu also praised Jacobs for the depth, dignity and authenticity he brought to the numerous characters he portrayed throughout his career, noting that his performances earned him widespread admiration both in Nigeria and abroad.

The President described the late actor as a “giant of the Nigerian creative industry,” saying his death represented a major loss to Nigeria, the African film industry and the global community of performing arts enthusiasts.

According to Tinubu, Jacobs’ extensive body of work would continue to influence and inspire generations yet unborn.

“The nation recognises the enormous contributions of Nigeria’s creative practitioners to the country’s cultural identity, global image and economic development.

Olu Jacobs played a big role in creating this identity,” the President said.

Jacobs reportedly trained at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and went on to establish a successful career in British television and international film before returning to Nigeria, where he became one of the most respected figures in the country’s growing film industry.

Over the years, he received numerous industry honours and awards in recognition of his contributions to acting and filmmaking.

He was also conferred with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).

President Tinubu extended his condolences to Jacobs’ family, particularly his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, their children and other relatives.

He also commiserated with his colleagues in Nollywood and the wider Nigerian creative community.

The President prayed for the repose of the soul of the late actor and for strength for his family, friends and admirers to bear the loss.

Olu Jacobs was widely regarded as one of the leading figures of Nigerian theatre, television and cinema, with a career that helped shape the development and international recognition of the country’s entertainment industry.
