Former Barcelona and Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman has announced the death of his wife, Bartina Koeman, prompting messages of condolence from the football community in the Netherlands and beyond.
Koeman confirmed the sad news in an emotional tribute to his wife, describing Bartina as his “beautiful wife” and the family’s “dearest mother and grandmother.”
“With intense sadness, but also with great pride and love, we say goodbye to my beautiful wife, our dearest mother and grandmother,” Koeman said in his tribute.
The announcement has attracted an outpouring of sympathy from clubs, football organisations and supporters who have offered their condolences to Koeman and his family during the difficult period.
Barcelona, where Koeman served as head coach between 2020 and 2021, expressed its sadness over Bartina’s passing and extended its support to the former manager and his family.
“FC Barcelona and its supporters send their deepest condolences and affection to Ronald Koeman and his family for the passing of his wife, Bartina Koeman. May she rest in peace,” the Spanish club said.
The Netherlands national team also paid tribute to Bartina and expressed solidarity with Koeman, who has served as head coach of the Dutch national side.
The team extended its condolences to Koeman, his children, grandchildren and other members of the family, wishing them strength as they cope with the loss.
“We wish Ronald, their (grand)children, family, and other loved ones a great deal of strength and support in the face of this great loss,” the message said.
Koeman, 63, is regarded as one of the prominent figures in Dutch football, having enjoyed a distinguished career both as a player and a manager.
As a player, he was known for his defensive ability, powerful free-kicks and goalscoring contributions, before eventually moving into coaching and taking charge of several leading clubs and national teams.
His managerial career has included spells with Ajax, Southampton, Everton, Barcelona and the Netherlands, among others.
He has also returned to the Netherlands national team for different periods during his coaching career.
Koeman and Bartina had been married for decades and have three children together. Their family has now asked for privacy while they mourn her death and deal with the loss.
Tributes from across the football world are expected to continue as former clubs, players, colleagues and supporters offer their condolences to Koeman and his family.
