Mitch McConnell Returns to US Senate After Three-Month Absence

United States Senator Mitch McConnell has returned to the Senate after being away from public view for more than three months following a fall at his home in Washington, D.C.

The 84-year-old Republican senator from Kentucky cast his first Senate vote since June on Monday, marking his return to congressional duties after spending time in hospital and later undergoing rehabilitation.

Speaking to reporters outside the Senate chamber, McConnell said he was pleased to be back and ready to resume his responsibilities.

“I’m glad to see you. Time to get back to work, finish the job for this Congress,” he told reporters.

McConnell later confirmed his return in a statement posted on X, saying he was looking forward to being back on the Senate floor and reconnecting with his colleagues.

“Today, I’ll cast my first Senate vote since I took a bad fall back in June,” he said.

Although McConnell acknowledged that he has not yet returned to full strength, he said he would make every effort to attend important Senate votes whenever his Republican colleagues needed him.

He also disclosed that the lingering effects of childhood polio had made his recovery more difficult.

McConnell’s prolonged absence had generated concerns within the Republican Party, particularly because Republicans currently hold a narrow 53–47 majority in the Senate.

His absence had already affected some key votes, including a resolution concerning US President Donald Trump’s war with Iran, which passed after four Republicans joined Democrats in supporting it.

McConnell is the longest-serving Senate leader in US history. He announced last year that he would not seek an eighth term in the Senate.

His final term is scheduled to end in January 2027, although questions had been raised by Kentucky Democratic Governor Andy Beshear about whether McConnell would be able to continue serving until the end of his tenure.

With his return to the Senate floor, McConnell is expected to resume a more active role in crucial legislative and party decisions during the remainder of the current congressional session
