The Niger State Government has issued a flood alert to residents and communities along the Kaduna River Basin following sustained inflows into the Shiroro Reservoir during the ongoing 2026 rainy season.
The state government warned that water levels in the River Kaduna and surrounding areas could rise significantly, particularly if increased inflows into the Shiroro Reservoir continue.
It also disclosed that a controlled release of water from the Shiroro Reservoir may become necessary in September as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of the dam and protect communities located downstream.
The warning was contained in a public service announcement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr Obed Nana, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Minna on Friday.
According to Nana, the alert followed a notification from North South Power Company Limited, the operator of the Shiroro Hydroelectric Power Plant, concerning improved inflows into the River Kaduna catchment and the Shiroro Reservoir.
The commissioner explained that recent hydrological observations indicated sustained inflows into the reservoir, with high inflows expected to persist during the rainy season in line with the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency.
He said any controlled release of water, if considered necessary, would be carried out as a safety measure aimed at reducing pressure on the dam infrastructure and protecting downstream communities.
The government urged residents living in flood-prone communities to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions throughout the remainder of the rainy season.
Farmers cultivating along the River Kaduna floodplain were specifically advised to exercise caution and remain alert to possible changes in water levels.
Similarly, fishermen, boat operators and others whose activities depend on the river were urged to take additional safety measures and avoid unnecessary risks during periods of rising water levels.
Nana also appealed to traditional and community leaders to ensure that the warning reaches residents in their respective areas. He encouraged members of the public to pay close attention to subsequent advisories from the state government and relevant emergency and water management authorities.
The commissioner stressed that residents should not panic but should remain alert and take appropriate precautionary measures to protect lives, property and livelihoods.
He noted that increased inflows into the reservoir, combined with any possible controlled release, could result in elevated water levels downstream.
Nana assured residents that the Niger State Government, working with relevant agencies and stakeholders, would continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates whenever necessary.
He further urged residents to take the flood warning seriously and cooperate with authorities throughout the remaining period of the rainy season.
The advisory comes amid renewed concerns over flooding in several parts of Nigeria as heavy rainfall and rising water levels continue to pose risks to communities located near rivers, dams and floodplains.
