Resident doctors at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, Oyo State, have raised the alarm over worsening working conditions, severe understaffing and welfare challenges affecting medical personnel at the institution.

The doctors, under the aegis of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, said they were compelled to speak out in defence of their profession and dignity following what they described as persistent neglect and unfulfilled promises by the authorities.

In a statement jointly signed by the ARD President, Dr Mustapha Adedapo A., and the General Secretary, Dr John Stephen, the doctors lamented that resident doctors continued to work under difficult conditions despite the critical role they play in providing healthcare services.

They listed severe understaffing, unpaid minimum wage arrears, unfulfilled promises on allowances and dilapidated call rooms among the major challenges confronting members of the association.

“Today, resident doctors of LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, stand united. We took an oath to save lives, but today, we are forced to take a stand to save our own profession and dignity,” the statement said.

The association warned that doctors working under prolonged stress and neglect could struggle to provide the quality healthcare patients deserved.

It stressed that its demands were not for luxury but for basic human dignity, fair compensation and adequate funding for medical residency training.

“We are not asking for luxuries; we are demanding basic human dignity, fair compensation and the proper funding of medical residency training,” the association stated.

The doctors appealed to the Oyo State Government, Governor, hospital management and other relevant stakeholders to urgently intervene by addressing their grievances and improving their welfare and working environment.

According to the association, resolving the outstanding issues would enable resident doctors to focus fully on their primary responsibility of providing quality healthcare and saving lives.

The doctors maintained that their members remained united in the struggle, stressing that urgent action was needed to address the challenges confronting the hospital and its medical workforce.
