Liverpool’s frustrating start to the new Premier League season continued on Saturday after the Reds were held to a 2-2 draw by Nottingham Forest at Anfield.
In an entertaining and closely contested encounter, Liverpool twice had to fight back from behind as Forest showed impressive resilience against the hosts.
Despite dominating periods of the match and creating pressure late in the game, Liverpool were unable to find the winning goal.
Nottingham Forest stunned the home supporters when Dan Ndoye opened the scoring in the 24th minute.
The forward finished from an opportunity created by Morgan Gibbs-White, giving the visitors an early advantage and putting Liverpool on the back foot.
The goal appeared to unsettle the hosts, who struggled to break through Forest’s organised defence during much of the first half.
Liverpool had possession but found it difficult to turn their control into clear scoring opportunities, while Forest remained dangerous whenever they moved forward.
Liverpool eventually found their breakthrough shortly after the hour mark when Alexander Isak restored parity.
The forward finished following good work from Cody Gakpo, bringing the home side back into the contest and raising hopes among the Anfield crowd that Liverpool could go on to complete the comeback.
However, Forest responded strongly and regained the lead just 10 minutes later.
Gibbs-White stepped up to convert a penalty after Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker was adjudged to have fouled an opponent inside the penalty area.
The successful spot-kick made it 2-1 and once again left Liverpool chasing the game.
With time running out, Liverpool increased the pressure and pushed more players forward in search of another equaliser.
Their efforts were rewarded in the 82nd minute when Victor Muñoz produced a spectacular finish to make it 2-2.
The late equaliser gave Liverpool fresh momentum, and the hosts continued attacking in the closing stages as they searched for a dramatic winner.
Forest, however, stood firm and managed to withstand the pressure, securing a valuable point away from home.
The result leaves Liverpool still searching for their first Premier League victory of the season after two matches under manager Andoni Iraola.
The Reds had also been held to a draw by Newcastle United in their opening league fixture.
The early results will raise questions about Liverpool’s ability to quickly adapt to Iraola’s approach, although the season remains at an early stage and there is plenty of time for the team to improve.
For Nottingham Forest, the draw was an encouraging result following their opening-round defeat to Leeds United.
Their performance at Anfield showed character, particularly after Liverpool twice fought back to level the score.
Forest’s ability to repeatedly regain the lead and defend under sustained pressure will provide confidence as they continue their Premier League campaign.
Liverpool, meanwhile, will now turn their attention to their next fixture with the aim of ending their winless run and getting their season back on track.
The Reds will need to improve their defensive discipline and become more clinical in front of goal if they are to challenge consistently at the top end of the Premier League table.
