Two Nigerians Charged Over Murder Of UK-Based Nigerian In London

Two Nigerians, Maxwell Oguanaya, 32, and Chibueze Chukwurah, 34, have been arrested and charged in connection with the alleged murder of UK-based Nigerian, Taiwo Ekerin, in London.

Ekerin died in May 2026 after sustaining a severe head injury during a violent assault outside the Alpha Lounge nightclub on Lewisham High Street.

Following the incident, the Metropolitan Police launched a murder investigation, codenamed ‘Operation Doughwall’, which led to the arrest and charging of Oguanaya and Chukwurah a day later in Glasgow.

According to a statement by the founder of Nigerians in the UK Community, Benjamin Kuti, popularly known as Oluomo of Derby, the two suspects have been remanded in custody and are expected to face trial over the alleged murder.

Kuti said the Nigerian community in the UK had been deeply affected by Ekerin’s death.

He said, “The tragic killing of Taiwo Ekerin in Lewisham in May has deeply affected the Nigerian community in the UK.

“Two Nigerian citizens, Maxwell Oguanaya, 32, and Chibueze Chukwurah, 34, have been arrested and charged in connection with his murder. Both men have been remanded in custody and are due to face trial.

“If convicted of murder, they could face a life sentence. However, it is important to remember that being charged with an offence does not mean someone is guilty. They remain innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.”

If convicted of murder, the two men could face life imprisonment under UK law.
