President Bola Tinubu on Thursday held a closed-door meeting with governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the State House in Abuja, as political activities and preparations for the 2027 general elections continue to gather momentum within the ruling party.
The meeting involved members of the Progressives Governors’ Forum, the body comprising APC governors across the country.
The governors had earlier attended the National Economic Council meeting chaired by Vice-President Kashim Shettima before proceeding to the Presidential Villa for the separate engagement with President Tinubu.
The details of the discussions between the President and the governors were not immediately made public as the meeting was still ongoing when the report was filed.
However, the timing of the meeting is significant, coming shortly after the APC began putting its campaign and organisational structures in place ahead of the 2027 elections.
The ruling party recently constituted its presidential campaign council as part of its strategy for the forthcoming election. Former Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari, was appointed Director-General of the campaign council, while Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, was named Secretary.
The APC has also announced plans to resume its electronic membership registration exercise nationwide.
The exercise is expected to enable the party to expand its membership base, update its records and strengthen its structures at the grassroots level ahead of the general election.
According to the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the electronic membership registration exercise will officially reopen on Monday, August 31.
The development comes as the APC continues efforts to consolidate its political structure and improve coordination among its national leadership, governors and other key stakeholders.
The party is expected to intensify consultations and mobilisation activities as the 2027 election draws closer.
The meeting between Tinubu and the APC governors therefore highlights the increasing focus on political coordination within the ruling party, with governors expected to play a major role in grassroots mobilisation and the implementation of the party’s electoral strategy in their respective states.
As the 2027 political season gradually takes shape, the APC’s campaign council, membership registration exercise and renewed engagement between President Tinubu and the party’s governors are likely to form important components of its preparations for the presidential and general elections.
