Atiku Will Sign Fuel Price Pact With Nigerians If Elected – ADC Chieftain

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Ralph Nwosu, has said the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, will sign a formal agreement with Nigerians on petrol pricing if elected president in 2027.

Nwosu, a former national chairman of the ADC, disclosed this on Arise Television’s Daybreak on Thursday while speaking on Atiku’s proposal to restore fuel subsidy.

Atiku has consistently criticised the removal of fuel subsidy, saying the policy has increased economic hardship and pushed more Nigerians into poverty.

Nwosu said Atiku’s campaign would provide Nigerians with clear details of how the proposed subsidy regime would work, including the price of petrol under his administration.

He said the former vice-president would make a specific commitment to Nigerians before taking office.

“Atiku will sign a contract. We will soon launch our campaign proper. We are just beginning the bonfire,” Nwosu said.

According to him, the agreement would contain specific commitments on fuel prices and other components of Atiku’s economic agenda.

“We will soon launch it, and Atiku will sign a contract with the Nigerian people. And in signing that contract, he will tell them specifically that by May 29th, this will be the cost of fuel and this is how it will go,” he said.

Nwosu said the ADC was also developing policies that Atiku would implement within the first months of his administration if elected.

He disclosed that the campaign team was working on a programme for the candidate’s first 100 days in office, stressing that the approach was aimed at ensuring that campaign promises were supported by concrete plans.

“Atiku’s campaign is already sitting down to work on his first 100th day in office, so that we don’t go ahead making reckless statements,” he said.

Atiku has maintained that Nigeria, with its abundant natural resources, has the capacity to provide economic relief to citizens while implementing wider reforms.

The former vice-president has also pledged to tackle economic and physical insecurity if elected president in 2027.

The fuel subsidy debate is expected to remain a major issue in the build-up to the 2027 presidential election, particularly after President Bola Tinubu removed the subsidy in May 2023.

While the Tinubu administration has defended the removal as necessary for economic reform, Atiku has argued that government intervention is required to cushion Nigerians from the effects of the policy.
