Nottingham Forest have completed the signing of Chelsea striker Liam Delap in a club-record £50 million transfer, with the 23-year-old forward agreeing to a five-year contract at the City Ground.

Delap’s move brings an end to his brief spell at Chelsea, where he spent just one season after joining the London club for around £30 million. Despite arriving with high expectations, the striker struggled to secure a regular starting position and managed only one Premier League goal during his time at Stamford Bridge.

The transfer to Forest is expected to give Delap an opportunity to rebuild his confidence and rediscover the form that previously established him as one of the Premier League’s most promising young forwards.

The striker enjoyed an impressive 2024/25 campaign with Ipswich Town, scoring 12 Premier League goals despite playing for a side that won only four matches throughout the season and was eventually relegated.

His performances attracted the attention of several clubs before Chelsea secured his services for approximately £30 million.

However, after just one season in west London, Chelsea have agreed to sell him to Nottingham Forest for £50 million, reportedly earning a significant profit from the deal.

Delap’s performances at Ipswich were built around his combination of physical strength, pace, direct running and ability to carry the ball into dangerous areas.

He recorded 26 shot-ending carries during the 2024/25 Premier League season, the most among strikers in the competition.

Those qualities are expected to be particularly important at Forest, where Delap will be tasked with providing a strong attacking presence and contributing goals to the team’s campaign.

The forward will now work under manager Oliver Glasner, who Delap believes can help him take another important step in his development.

The striker said discussions with Glasner played a significant role in his decision to join Forest.

Delap described Nottingham Forest as a “massive club” with a strong history and said he was attracted by the manager’s style and his plans for helping players improve.

The move represents a major financial commitment from Forest, making Delap the club’s record signing. The club will expect the young striker to justify the investment by reproducing the attacking form he showed during his time at Ipswich.

For Delap, the transfer provides an opportunity to put a disappointing season at Chelsea behind him and establish himself at another Premier League club.

Forest will also be hoping that the striker’s combination of youth, physical ability and previous Premier League experience can strengthen their attack and help the club compete more effectively.

With a five-year contract now in place, Delap has the opportunity to settle at the City Ground and develop into a central figure in Forest’s long-term plans
