UBA Welcomes Emmanuel Nnorom as New Group Chairman as Tony Elumelu Retires

United Bank for Africa Plc has officially welcomed Emmanuel Nnorom as its new Group Chairman, following the retirement of Tony Elumelu from the position.

Nnorom assumed office on August 21, 2026, after Elumelu completed the maximum tenure allowed for non-executive directors under the corporate governance guidelines of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

UBA announced Nnorom’s appointment on its social media platforms on Wednesday, describing him as an experienced business executive and chartered accountant with more than 40 years of professional experience.

The new chairman is a long-serving member of the UBA Group, having held several senior executive positions over the years.

His previous roles include Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of UBA Africa, Group Chief Operating Officer and Group Chief Financial Officer.

He also served as an Executive Director responsible for various areas of the group, including finance, risk and the Group Executive Office, before joining the UBA board as a Non-Executive Director in 2024.

In welcoming him, UBA said Nnorom’s extensive experience and knowledge of the institution would be valuable as the financial group continues to expand its operations across Africa and other markets.

As CEO of UBA Africa, Nnorom was responsible for overseeing the bank’s activities across several African countries and played a role in supporting its pan-African expansion.

Beyond UBA, Nnorom has held senior positions in major Nigerian businesses and financial institutions.

He served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Transnational Corporation Plc from September 2014 to May 2017 and has been the Group Chief Executive Officer of Heirs Holdings since June 2017.

His banking career also includes senior management positions at Standard Trust Bank, which later became part of UBA, as well as Diamond Bank, NUB International Bank and Liberty Merchant Bank.

Nnorom is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and an Honorary Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria.

He also attended Templeton College, Oxford, where he completed executive leadership and management programmes.

His appointment comes as UBA continues to strengthen its presence across the African continent.

The bank said Nnorom’s experience and understanding of the group’s operations would help guide the institution during its next phase of growth.

Elumelu’s departure marks the end of his tenure as Group Chairman, while Nnorom takes over leadership of the board at a significant period in UBA’s continued expansion and development.
