Al-Nassr manager Ange Postecoglou has explained his decision to substitute Cristiano Ronaldo at half-time during his team’s dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League.
Ronaldo, 41, was handed his first start since the World Cup but was taken off at the interval with Al-Nassr trailing 2-0 and playing with 10 men.
The Portuguese superstar appeared frustrated as he left the pitch, raising his arms towards the technical area in a gesture that suggested he questioned the decision.
However, Postecoglou’s tactical changes eventually paid off as Al-Nassr produced an impressive second-half turnaround.
Sadio Mane and Abdulelah Al Amri scored within a three-minute spell to bring Al-Nassr level before Mane completed the comeback by scoring again in stoppage time, securing a thrilling 3-2 victory for the Saudi champions.
Postecoglou defended his decision to replace Ronaldo, explaining that he believed the players introduced at half-time were better suited to changing the course of the match under the difficult circumstances.
“When I made the substitutions, including taking Ronaldo off, I believed the players coming on could make an impact,” Postecoglou said.
The Australian manager praised the substitutes for their contribution, stressing that every player who came off the bench played a positive role in the comeback.
“I came here to help the players, so as I said, I’m proud of them because every substitute made a positive contribution,” he added.
Despite replacing Ronaldo, Postecoglou was full of praise for the veteran forward’s first-half display. He acknowledged that Ronaldo had performed strongly before the break but said the team needed a different approach for the second half.
“I’m here to help the team with what I see, and everyone knows that Ronaldo hasn’t played in a long time.
He performed exceptionally well in the first half, and we opted for a different approach,” the manager explained.
The result extended Al-Nassr’s perfect start to the season, with the club recording three victories from three matches.
The unbeaten run has moved them to the top of the Saudi Pro League standings and strengthened their early title ambitions.
Postecoglou, who took over at Al-Nassr last month following previous spells in charge of Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest, will hope the comeback provides further momentum as the season progresses.
For Ronaldo, the match is also significant as he approaches what could potentially be the final chapter of his remarkable career.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has previously suggested that he may retire after the current campaign, with the desire to spend more time with his family becoming increasingly important.
Despite his substitution, Ronaldo remains a key figure for Al-Nassr, while Postecoglou’s willingness to make bold tactical decisions could prove important as the club targets success domestically and in continental competition.
