The wife of the late former Niger State Commissioner for Education, Abubakar Daja, and three of her children have died in a tragic road accident along the Kutigi-Bida Road in Niger State.
The fatal crash occurred at about 11:30 a.m. on Sunday at Shebe Village and involved a Mazda car and a Toyota Sienna vehicle.
The incident reportedly resulted in multiple deaths and injuries, leaving families and residents of the area deeply shaken.
According to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, 18 people were initially involved in the accident.
Seven people were confirmed dead at the initial stage, seven others sustained various degrees of injuries, while four people escaped unhurt.
However, the death toll later rose to nine after two additional victims who were travelling in the Sienna vehicle were confirmed dead.
The deceased woman was reportedly travelling from Minna towards the Mokwa-Bida axis with her four children when their vehicle was involved in the collision.
She and three of her children died at the scene of the accident.
One of her children, a teenage girl, survived the crash but sustained serious injuries.
An eyewitness from Mokwa Local Government Area, Salihu Abubakar, said the girl was unconscious after suffering injuries around her ribs and shoulder.
Her condition reportedly caused concern among those who witnessed the incident.
The late Abubakar Daja, who hailed from Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State, served as the state’s Commissioner for Education following Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999.
He remained in the position until 2007 before leaving office. He died in 2025.
The latest tragedy has therefore brought renewed grief to the family, coming about a year after the death of the former commissioner.
An official of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, identified as Saadu, confirmed the crash and said emergency responders were deployed to the scene to rescue victims, recover the deceased and provide assistance to those who sustained injuries.
The injured victims were taken for medical attention as authorities continued efforts to manage the aftermath of the collision.
The incident has once again raised concerns about road safety and the dangers faced by motorists and passengers travelling on major roads across Niger State.
Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash and determine the factors that led to the fatal collision.
