EFCC Unfreezes Osun Government Accounts After Tinubu’s Directive

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has unfrozen the bank accounts of the Osun State Government following President Bola Tinubu’s directive that the restrictions be lifted.

The accounts, held with First Bank of Nigeria and Zenith Bank, had earlier been placed under a Post No Debit order by the anti-graft agency.

The restriction prevented withdrawals and other transactions from the accounts while the EFCC investigated alleged financial irregularities involving approximately N11 billion.

According to reports, the EFCC began investigating the Osun State Government in March 2026 over the alleged handling of Ecology Funds, Intervention Funds and allocations received from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).

The freezing of the accounts generated significant controversy, with critics alleging that the action was politically motivated and intended to weaken Governor Ademola Adeleke ahead of the recently concluded Osun State governorship election.

President Tinubu subsequently described the EFCC’s action as embarrassing and ordered the commission to release the accounts.

The presidential directive came after Adeleke emerged victorious in the election. Following his victory, the governor reportedly instructed the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwole Jimi-Bada, SAN, to withdraw the lawsuit filed against the EFCC over the restriction.

A Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi, confirmed that the accounts had been unfrozen, stressing that the EFCC could not disregard the President’s directive.

He said the restriction was lifted immediately after the presidential order.

An aide to Governor Adeleke, who spoke on condition of anonymity, also confirmed that the Post No Debit order had been cancelled and that the state government’s accounts were now fully operational.

The aide explained that the restoration of access to the accounts was one of the reasons the governor directed the Attorney-General to withdraw the legal action against the EFCC.

Although the EFCC and the Osun State Government had not issued detailed public statements on the development at the time of the report, the confirmation from the Presidency and the governor’s aide indicated that the accounts were functioning again.
