OAU Honours LAUTECH VC Kalilu for Outstanding Contributions to Art and Academia

The Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has honoured the Vice-Chancellor of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Prof. Razaq Kalilu, for his contributions to art, academic research, scholarship and university administration.

Kalilu was recognised alongside other distinguished alumni during a special alumni lecture and reunion organised by OAU’s Faculty of Environmental Design and Management as part of activities marking the university’s 65th anniversary.

The event, held at Oduduwa Hall on August 12, 2026, featured the presentation of Awards of Excellence to Kalilu and other notable alumni, including Bode Adediji and renowned sculptor Dotun Popoola.

In its citation, the faculty praised Kalilu for his extensive academic career and described him as a distinguished scholar whose work has contributed significantly to the development of art education in Nigeria.

The university highlighted several of his achievements, including pioneering academic programmes in Fine and Applied Arts and the development of postgraduate curricula covering Fine Art, Applied Art, Electronic and Digital Art, and Form and Material Technology.

Kalilu was also recognised for his contributions to postgraduate education.

He has supervised and examined 165 postgraduate students in various fields, including 44 PhD candidates.

The faculty further noted his achievements in producing pioneering graduates in several areas of art and architecture, describing his academic contributions as significant to the growth of creative and built-environment education in Nigeria.

Beyond scholarship, Kalilu has held several key administrative positions at LAUTECH, including Head of Department, Dean, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Acting Vice-Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor.

He has also received numerous local and international honours for his work in art, education and leadership.

Among them are the Gold Medal in the All Africa Painting Contest, the Merit Prize in an International Postage Stamp Design Contest and recognition as one of the 500 Leaders of World Influence by the American Biographical Institute.

The OAU recognition adds to a long list of honours received by Kalilu and underscores his contributions to Nigeria’s academic, artistic and educational development
