2027: Tinubu Meets Akpabio, Doguwa, Others as Campaigns Begin

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday held a series of closed-door meetings with senior political leaders and government officials at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, just hours before the official commencement of campaigns for the 2027 general elections.

The meetings came as the Independent National Electoral Commission fixed August 19, 2026, as the official date for the commencement of political campaigns ahead of the 2027 polls.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio arrived at the forecourt of the President’s office at about 6:12 pm in his official Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

At the time of his arrival, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, was reportedly already inside the President’s office for a meeting with Tinubu.

The lawmaker representing Doguwa/Tudun Wada Federal Constituency of Kano State, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, was also seen arriving at the presidential premises around 7:15 pm.

His visit followed that of the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, who arrived at the Villa about 20 minutes earlier.

Doguwa had earlier attended the National Peace Committee’s peace accord signing ceremony in Abuja, where political stakeholders renewed their commitment to peaceful political activities ahead of the 2027 elections.

Oyetola’s meeting with the President came only a few days after his successor as Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, was declared the winner of the August 15 governorship election.

The outcome of the election has attracted significant political attention across the country.

Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, was also sighted at the Presidential Villa during the series of meetings.

His visit came ahead of Wednesday’s scheduled Federal Executive Council meeting.

The exact agenda of the meetings was not made public. None of the officials spoke to journalists after their separate engagements with the President, leaving the details of the discussions undisclosed.

The meetings are taking place at a crucial period for Nigeria’s political landscape, as political parties prepare to intensify their activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

President Tinubu is expected to face increasing political engagements as parties begin mobilising supporters, building alliances and preparing their campaign structures across the country.

The commencement of campaigns is also expected to bring renewed focus to the performance of the current administration, its policies and programmes, as well as the political strategies of the various parties seeking to secure power in 2027.

With the campaign period now officially underway, political activities are expected to increase in the coming months as aspirants and party leaders begin nationwide consultations and mobilisation ahead of the election.
