Afrobeats superstar, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has described his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke’s re-election as a “war” against a formidable political force involving 17 governors, 50 senators and members of the House of Representatives.

Davido spoke on Tuesday while addressing journalists at his country home following Adeleke’s victory in the August 15 Osun State governorship election.

Congratulating his uncle, the singer said the election was a difficult contest in which several prominent political figures allegedly mobilised against the incumbent governor.

“Let me congratulate my governor for his re-election for the hard-fought battle. Let me not say battle but war, where you have 17 governors, 50 senators, House of Reps, I don’t know how many they were against one man and he came out victorious. God is good,” Davido said.

He attributed Adeleke’s victory to the support of Osun voters, whom he praised for standing by the governor and protecting their votes during the election.

Davido said the support for the Adeleke family was overwhelming, adding that he became emotional several times while witnessing events on election day.

“I can’t remember how many times I cried that day because the love was massive,” he said.

The singer said Adeleke’s re-election should serve as a lesson to political leaders across the country, arguing that leaders who work for their people would receive their support at the polls.

“My uncle should be an example to all other people out there. It shows all other governors out there that if you work for the people, the people will be with you and God,” he said.

Davido also thanked the people of Osun for supporting Adeleke and his family despite what he described as attempts at intimidation and vote-buying during the election.

Beyond the election, the singer announced plans to increase his involvement in youth and sports development in the state.

Davido, who is chairman of the Osun State Sports Trust Fund, said he had deliberately delayed some of his planned initiatives until after the governorship election.

“As chairman of the Sports Trust Fund, I want to do a lot of things but waited for the election to be over,” he said.

According to him, one of the projects being considered is the development of a recreation centre for young people, with facilities such as football pitches, swimming pools and basketball courts.

He said the proposed centre would give young people opportunities to discover, develop and showcase their sporting talents while providing a platform for healthy recreation.

Davido has been one of Adeleke’s most vocal celebrity supporters and actively participated in the governor’s campaign ahead of the election.

Adeleke secured a second term after defeating his major challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress, in the August 15 poll.

With the election concluded, Davido said his attention would now shift towards initiatives aimed at creating more opportunities for young people in Osun, particularly through sports and recreation.
