Gunmen Attack Plateau Community, Kill More Than 20 Residents

More than 20 people have reportedly been killed after suspected gunmen attacked Binper community in the Bwai District of Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The attackers reportedly invaded the community around midnight and continued their assault into the early hours of Tuesday, moving from house to house and attacking residents while they slept.

The incident occurred barely a week after three people were killed in the area amid growing tensions between the Fulani and Mwaghavul communities, which had previously exchanged allegations of arson.

The National President of the Mwaghavul Development Association, Bulus Dabit, said the attackers arrived in large numbers and were armed with sophisticated weapons.

According to Dabit, the assailants forcibly entered homes and attacked residents without warning.
He said more than 20 people had been confirmed dead as of Tuesday morning, while several others sustained injuries.

He added that some residents remained unaccounted for following the attack.

The spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, SP Alfred Alabo, confirmed the incident but said he could not immediately provide further details.

Alabo explained that security personnel were still operating in the affected community and assessing the situation.

The latest attack has heightened fears among residents, with many reportedly concerned about their safety and the possibility of further violence in neighbouring communities.

The incident is expected to renew calls for increased security presence in the area.

Residents and community leaders are also appealing to security agencies to intensify efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible for the killings, while urging authorities to take measures to prevent further attacks and restore peace in the affected communities.
