Chukwueze Thrives in New Role as Amorim Gives Him Fresh Opportunity at Milan

AC Milan winger Samuel Chukwueze is enjoying a strong start under new head coach Ruben Amorim as the Italian club prepares for the 2026/27 season.

The Nigerian international was one of Milan’s standout players in their 4-2 pre-season victory over Manchester United on Saturday, scoring once and providing two assists.

Chukwueze’s impressive performance came after Amorim experimented with his position during pre-season.

The 27-year-old, who has spent most of his career playing as an attacking winger, has been given a new role as a wing-back.

The change appears to be working, with Chukwueze showing confidence and attacking threat in the unfamiliar position.

His performance against Manchester United may have strengthened his case for a regular place in Amorim’s team.

Speaking about the opportunity, Chukwueze said he was grateful for the confidence shown in him by the Portuguese coach.

“Amorim is a good coach and he trusts me. He has given me an opportunity, and now it is up to me to take it. I cannot waste this opportunity after returning to Milan from my loan spell,” Chukwueze said.

He admitted that playing as a wing-back is a new challenge but insisted that he was ready to adapt to the demands of the position.

“I have never played in this position in my career, but as a footballer, you have to believe in your coach and do what he asks. He knows exactly what he wants,” he explained.

Chukwueze added that he was determined to keep improving and make the most of his chance to establish himself at Milan.

“I just have to keep working hard and believing in myself. I know it is difficult, but I believe I can do it. I believe I can achieve anything,” he said.

The winger also praised Amorim and the coaching staff for helping him understand the tactical demands of his new role.

According to Chukwueze, the coach regularly corrects him during training and explains what he needs to do better.

“He helps me every time I make a mistake. He tells me what I need to do, so I believe I will continue to improve before the season begins,” he said.

The new tactical role could give Chukwueze an opportunity to enjoy his most productive spell at Milan since joining the club in 2023.

He recently returned to the Italian side following a loan spell at Fulham.

The Premier League club decided not to activate the €26 million option to make his move permanent.

During his time at Fulham, Chukwueze scored three goals and registered four assists in 23 Premier League appearances.

He also formed a strong relationship with fellow Nigerians Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey.

With Amorim showing confidence in him and his pre-season performances improving, Chukwueze will now hope to carry his form into the new season and secure a more important role in Milan’s plans.
