Cameroon Claim Historic First WAFCON Title After 3–0 Win Over Malawi

Cameroon have been crowned champions of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) for the first time after defeating Malawi 3–0 in the 2026 final in Rabat, Morocco.

The Indomitable Lionesses delivered a dominant performance in the first half, scoring all three goals before the break and effectively putting the match beyond Malawi’s reach.

Marie Ngah Manga opened the scoring before Naomi Eto doubled Cameroon’s lead with an impressive swivelling finish.

Ngah Manga then scored her second goal of the match to give Cameroon a commanding 3–0 advantage at half-time.

Cameroon remained composed after the interval, protecting their lead to secure a historic victory and finally lift the continental trophy after several previous disappointments.

The triumph ends Cameroon’s long wait for the WAFCON title.

The team had previously finished as runners-up three times, with their most recent final appearance coming in 2016, when they lost 1–0 to Nigeria.

Veteran forward Gabrielle Onguene, 37, who was part of Cameroon’s 2016 final squad, came on as a substitute during stoppage time in Rabat.

The appearance marked her eighth participation in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, making the historic triumph even more special.

For Malawi, the final represented their first-ever appearance in the WAFCON championship match.

Their remarkable campaign ultimately ended in defeat against a dominant Cameroon side.

Cameroon’s victory marks a major milestone in African women’s football and secures the country’s place among the continent’s champions.

The historic achievement is expected to further boost women’s football in Cameroon and inspire a new generation of players.

The victory also sparked celebrations among Cameroonian supporters in Rabat and back home, as the national team finally converted years of strong performances on the continental stage into a historic championship triumph.
