Italy’s Euro 2020 Champion Ciro Immobile Retires After 17 Years

Former Italy and Lazio striker Ciro Immobile has announced his retirement from professional football after a 17-year career.

The 36-year-old’s French club, Paris FC, confirmed his decision on Friday, saying the striker wanted to dedicate more of his time to his family and loved ones.

Immobile joined Paris FC from Bologna in February 2026 and made 12 Ligue 1 appearances, scoring twice before bringing his playing career to an end.

Across his club career, Immobile scored 306 goals in 599 competitive appearances.

He also represented Italy 57 times, scoring 17 goals for the national team.

One of the highlights of his international career came at Euro 2020, when he was part of the Italy squad that won the European Championship.

Immobile scored twice during the tournament as Italy eventually defeated England on penalties in the final at Wembley in July 2021, after the competition had been postponed by a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Immobile enjoyed the most successful period of his club career at Lazio, where he spent eight seasons and became the club’s all-time leading goalscorer with 207 goals in 340 appearances.

During his time in Rome, he helped Lazio win the Coppa Italia and two Italian Super Cups. In 2020, he also won the European Golden Shoe after scoring 36 Serie A goals, matching Gonzalo Higuaín’s record for the most goals in a single SerieA season.

Immobile finished as Serie A’s top scorer four times. Before and after his successful spell at Lazio, he played for several clubs, including Juventus, Pescara, Genoa, Torino, Borussia Dortmund, Sevilla and Besiktas.

His retirement brings an end to a distinguished career in which he established himself as one of Italy’s most prolific strikers of his generation.
