Madugu Apologises as Super Falcons Miss Women’s World Cup for First Time

Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu has apologised to Nigerians after Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time in the history of the tournament.

The Falcons’ hopes of reaching the competition were ended by a 2-1 defeat to South Africa in the Confederation of African Football play-off at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco on Thursday.

Madugu accepted responsibility for the disappointing result and expressed regret over the team’s failure to secure qualification.

“We have to apologise to Nigerians for our inability to make it to the World Cup. We are very sorry. It was not our intention,” Madugu said after the match.

The coach admitted that the Falcons failed to make the most of their opportunities and were punished for defensive mistakes.

Nigeria had missed the chance to qualify automatically after suffering a 1-0 quarter-final defeat to Cameroon.

The continental play-off against South Africa provided another route to the World Cup, but the Falcons were unable to take advantage of it.

South Africa took the lead in the 56th minute through Thembi Kgatlana before Refiloe Jane doubled the advantage in the 77th minute.

Nigeria eventually pulled one goal back through Christy Ucheibe from the penalty spot in added time.

The penalty was awarded following a VAR review, which also led to Jane receiving a red card.

Despite the late pressure, Nigeria could not find a second goal as South Africa held on for victory.

Madugu said Nigeria had created enough chances to win the game but lacked the necessary composure in front of goal.

“We have a goal-scoring problem because we have not been clinical in front of goal. We create several chances, but we are wasteful with the opportunities that come our way,” he said.

He also attributed the defensive problems to individual errors and poor decision-making, noting that South Africa was more efficient when its opportunities came.

The defeat ends Nigeria’s remarkable record of appearing at every Women’s World Cup since the inaugural tournament in 1991.

South Africa will now advance to the intercontinental play-off tournament, where they will have another chance to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
