President Bola Tinubu has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to ensure a peaceful, transparent and credible governorship election in Osun State on Saturday, August 15, 2026.

Fifteen candidates are contesting the election, with the major contenders including incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party, All Progressives Congress candidate Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, and African Democratic Congress candidate Najeem Salaam.

Tinubu made the call in a statement issued on Friday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

The President urged INEC to uphold the integrity of the electoral process and ensure that voting and the announcement of results are conducted in an orderly and transparent manner.

He described the Osun election as an important test for INEC ahead of the 2027 general elections, urging the commission to use the poll to demonstrate its preparedness to conduct credible elections.

The President also directed the Inspector-General of Police and other security agencies deployed to the state to provide adequate protection for voters, electoral officials and election materials.

He warned that no individual or group should be allowed to disrupt the exercise.
Tinubu further called for the protection of voters and election officials against intimidation, stressing that residents should be able to exercise their constitutional right to vote freely and without fear.

He encouraged eligible voters across Osun State to turn out in large numbers and vote for candidates of their choice while maintaining peace and avoiding actions capable of causing violence or disrupting the electoral process.

The President said the credibility of the election would depend largely on whether the final outcome reflects the genuine choice of Osun voters.

He therefore urged all political actors and other stakeholders to respect the democratic process and accept the outcome of a free and fair election.
