Sultan Confirms Friday as First Day of Rabi’ul Awwal 1448 AH

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has declared Friday, August 14, 2026, as the first day of Rabi’ul Awwal 1448 AH.

The declaration followed the successful sighting of the new crescent moon in different parts of Nigeria on Thursday, August 13, which marked the 29th day of Safar 1448 AH.

In a statement issued on behalf of the Sultan by the Wazirin Sokoto and Chairman of the Sultanate Council Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu, the council said it received credible reports of the moon sighting from authorised committees across the country.

The reports were carefully verified by the Sultanate Council Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs in collaboration with the National Moon Sighting Committee before being presented to the Sultan for consideration.

After reviewing the reports, Sultan Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar accepted the sightings and approved Friday as the beginning of Rabi’ul Awwal 1448 AH.

Rabi’ul Awwal is regarded as an important month in the Islamic calendar and is traditionally associated with significant events in the life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), particularly his birth and passing.

The declaration will guide Muslims, Islamic scholars, institutions and communities across Nigeria in determining dates for religious activities and observances during the new month.

The Sultanate Council urged Muslims nationwide to take note of the announcement and observe their religious activities in line with the commencement of Rabi’ul Awwal 1448 AH.

Consequently, Friday, August 14, 2026, is recognised as 1 Rabi’ul Awwal 1448 AH in Nigeria
