US Rejects AI-Enhanced Passport Photos for Visa Applications

The United States Mission in Nigeria has warned visa applicants not to use artificial intelligence (AI) or digital editing tools to alter their passport photographs, stating that such images will not be accepted.

In a statement posted on its official X account on Saturday, the mission stressed that passport photos must be recent, authentic, and clearly reflect the applicant’s appearance.

“Do not use AI or digital editing tools on your passport photo. We will not accept photos that are edited or filtered,” the statement read.

The mission added that passport photographs should have been taken within the last six months and must accurately represent the applicant so that immigration and security officials can easily verify their identity.

Applicants were encouraged to review the complete photo requirements on the US Department of State’s website before submitting their visa applications.

The warning is part of ongoing efforts by US authorities to prevent the use of AI-generated or altered images in official documentation, as border security systems increasingly depend on clear and unedited photographs for identity verification.
