Army Probes Leaked DSS Intelligence On Planned Boko Haram Attacks In Borno, Adamawa

The Nigerian Army has launched an internal investigation into the leakage of a classified Department of State Services (DSS) intelligence report warning of planned attacks by suspected Boko Haram insurgents and bandits in parts of Borno and Adamawa states.

The investigation, according to Punch, is being conducted by senior officers of the 232 Battalion in Yola, Adamawa State, to identify the personnel responsible for circulating the confidential document, which was sent by the DSS to alert the military to impending attacks.

A security source familiar with the development disclosed that the intelligence report had already been received and officially registered by the battalion before it was leaked to the public.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media, alleged that an officer photographed the document after it had been entered into the battalion’s registry and shared it with unauthorised persons.

According to the source, the leak has caused unnecessary panic among residents, noting that the intelligence was intended to enable security agencies to take preventive measures without creating public alarm.

“The document had already been registered at the 232 Battalion before it was leaked. An officer snapped it and sent it out to whoever he or she wanted for reasons best known to the person.

“The unfortunate thing is that people are now panicking. The DSS quietly alerted the battalion to remain on the alert over the planned attacks, but the document eventually found its way into the public domain,” the source said.

Another military officer confirmed that the battalion had commenced a formal investigation into the incident, describing the leak as an act capable of undermining national security.

The officer vowed that those responsible would be identified and held accountable, insisting that the military would not tolerate actions that compromise security operations.

“There is nothing that can stop us from fishing out those behind the leaked DSS document.

“We must fish out the bad eggs among us. Nigeria’s national security cannot be compromised for personal selfish interests,” the officer said.

The leaked intelligence report, dated July 27, 2026, was addressed to the Commander of the 23 Armoured Brigade in Yola.

According to the document, the DSS warned that suspected Boko Haram insurgents were planning coordinated attacks in Michika Local Government Area of Adamawa State and Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State following the reported collapse of a ceasefire arrangement.

The report stated that the terrorists were allegedly plotting to abduct top government officials, councillors, district heads, religious leaders and residents in the affected communities.

It also identified the district head of Michika and his son among those allegedly targeted for abduction.

The intelligence further indicated that the insurgents had deployed surveillance teams to monitor activities in the affected areas ahead of the planned attacks.

In response to the threat, the DSS advised the Nigerian Army to collaborate with forest guards and local hunters to strengthen security in the vulnerable communities and prevent the planned attacks.
