Lawal, Umoafia and Didih Win Record-Breaking Gold Medals for Nigeria

Team Nigeria continued its impressive performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Monday, as weightlifters Rafiatu Folashade Lawal, Edidiong Joseph Umoafia and Onome Omolola Didih all won gold medals, setting new Commonwealth Games records in their respective events.

Lawal claimed gold in the women’s 58kg category with a combined lift of 229kg, establishing a new Games record.

She led the competition from the start with a 103kg snatch before securing victory with a 126kg clean and jerk.

Canada’s Ann-Sophie Taschereau won silver, while India’s Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam took bronze.

Earlier, Umoafia delivered a record-breaking performance in the men’s 71kg event, lifting a total of 319kg to win gold. Samoa’s John Lautafi Tafi earned silver with 314kg, while Nauru’s Ezekiel Moses secured bronze with 310kg.

Didih also impressed in the women’s 53kg category, setting new Commonwealth and Games records with a 93kg snatch before finishing with a total lift of 206kg to claim gold.

India’s Gyaneshwari Yadav won silver and Canada’s Rebeka Groulx took bronze.

The victories increased Nigeria’s medal haul to six gold and four silver medals.

The country has also enjoyed success in para powerlifting, where Esther Nworgu, Folashade Oluwafemiayo and Riluwan Idris have all won gold medals.

With athletics events gathering momentum, Team Nigeria is looking to build on what is already shaping up to be one of its most successful Commonwealth Games campaigns.
