Hundreds of former Israeli military, intelligence, and diplomatic officials have called on United States President Donald Trump to pressure Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to address rising settler violence in the occupied West Bank.
In a letter released on Tuesday, nearly 600 former officials warned that escalating attacks by Israeli settlers could destabilise the region and threaten both Israeli and American interests.
The group, known as Commanders for Israel’s Security (CIS), said the situation could have serious security consequences if not addressed quickly.
The former officials argued that Trump is uniquely positioned to influence Netanyahu and help prevent further deterioration of the situation.
They also alleged that some members of the Israeli government have contributed to the unrest by shielding violent settlers from legal accountability.
According to the group, the increase in settler violence poses a major threat to regional stability and could have far-reaching consequences.
They urged Trump to raise the matter during his meeting with Netanyahu in Washington, D.C.
The appeal follows a weekend of clashes and attacks across the West Bank after a deadly confrontation in the town of Tal left two Israelis and four Palestinians dead.
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu is scheduled to meet Trump during his latest visit to the White House, where regional security and ongoing tensions in the Middle East are expected to be key topics of discussion.
